Craptastic Movies and the kids who love them

Recently I saw Zookeeper with my children. Yes, you heard me right. That was the most painfully unfunny and ridiculous movie with the thinnest plot ever. The boys giggled through the whole thing, and they are still talking about it. I wanted to see Winnie the Pooh. Obviously I relented because it's a little young for my oldest, but I can't help wondering why my children only ever want to see and enjoy really terrible movies.

I mean, they have great movies out for kids. Most of Pixar's (obviously not including Cars 2) and Disney's offerings  are entertaining and enjoyable for all ages. Kung Fu Panda, How to Train your Dragon and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? Awesome. I could watch those through a couple repeated viewings. Why can't they want to watch thosemovies? My boys will have nothing to do with them. Jacob loves him a Veggie tales Movie, and Drew's #1 movie all time? Yogi Bear, followed closely by Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Squeakquel. Not even the original. These computer anim-obiminations make you long for the days of the cartoons.

Honestly, it's tough for a Mom to take. I want to enjoy a show with them, but their choices are godawful. How do I instill some sense of taste in them? Also, why are there so many movies that talk down to kids? I just watched the end of The Dark Crystal. That is some scary kids movie shit. Nightmarishly so- no really I had tons of nightmares about this movie growing up. Now, I'm not saying we should have that dark of a movie for kids, but come on, lets not treat children like they have no mind at all.'Puppetry Arts Center, Atlanta 7' photo (c) 2006, Heather Kennedy - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/

-----Seriously- this puppet is where nightmares come from.

I know, I know, it's my fault for letting them watch these terrible movies in the first place.... but a Mom's got to have some alone time, and Pixar's thoughtful movies just aren't keeping them entertained.

So- any suggestions for ridiculously silly movies that a parent can enjoy, are there some gems I am overlooking?

Also- what's the worst movie you saw for the sake of your kids?

And finally- how am I going to get the kids to see The Muppets with them in the fall? I might have to bribe them with candy... oh wait, of course I am going to have to bribe them with candy.

Day 2- My Favorite Movie

For my favorite movie, I must name two movies, because for every sweet there is a sour, every yin has a yang, you get the idea. So I must include my favorite movie that makes me cry and makes me laugh.

My favorite sad movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In this movie, directed by the ever so amazing/weird/genius/strange work of Charlie Kaufman, who wrote Adaptation and Being John Malkovitch. Jim Carrey plays Joel Barrish, a man who has a procedure done to erase all of the memories of his ex, Clementine (Kate Winslett- Love her!) to get over their breakup. In the course of one night, she is erased from his memories. This movie is heartbreaking, beautiful and trippy all at once, and Jim Carrey is subtle, yet amazing in it. Even if you are not of fan of his, I think you would be impressed with him in this role. For all his eccentricities, the guy is a great actor.

My favorite Movie that makes me happy is Anchorman. Yes, it's stupid, very, very stupid. It is also the most quotable movie, and the first time I saw it I thought I was going to have a heart attack from laughing so hard. Will Ferrel is an acquired taste, but to me, he is a genius! If your disagree, I might call you a smelly pirate hooker. Just sayin'.

Thank you to Sass over at Secret Life of Sass and Lex for the great idea of a 30 Day Blog Journal. From one Mrs. Bee to another (yep, they are Bee's over there as well), thanks!

Jacob Needs a Nap

I know that many of probably already saw this on FB, but I couldn't resist. Listen to the music with the video (the song was on the satellite radio, we did not plan this), and watch for a cameo of Drew at the end.

Drew and Mommy Date #2

Today Drew had his 4 year check up... so we decided to make a day of it and go to a movie (Monster Vs. Aliens) and lunch.

Drew's 4 year appointment went very well! He was 50% for height and weight (and no longer was his BMI a possible concern for his pediatrician- not that I was ever worried that he was getting chunky- far from it.). His lymph nodes which worry me so much looked fine.

Drew was very concerned about getting his shots (and I was also maybe a smidge concerned). He was so worried when he got his shots when she asked him what he liked to play at home he told her he liked to get shots. He was very brave for his shots... until afterward. He cried and cried for so long, telling me how badly it hurt. We stopped at Walgreens and got three foam swords, twizzlers for the movie and children's ibuprofen. I'm not sure if it was the ibuprofen or the twizzlers or the foam swords... but by the time we reached the movie theater he was fine.

As far as the movie, it was a little too violent for my tastes, but Drew only got scared once (as compared to The Tale of Despereaux or whatever in which he was scared almost the entire time- he still talks about how I took him to "that scary movie". Geez!). I only had to bribe him with 2 pieces of gum to stay through the entire movie.

Then we went to Steak n' shake. He asked me to sit on the same side of the booth with him. I agreed even though it looked a little silly. He ate so much of his lunch I let him get a kid sized chocolate shake to go, and the we drove home. He fell asleep in the car holding his shake and when I removed it from his hand, he stirred a little. "I'm still drinking it," he said and immediately took a sip and fell asleep again mid sip. When it dropped onto the floor 5 minutes later, I didn't even comment, I just picked it up.

We came home and he woke up a little and we cuddled in my bed and talked about our day. So, to recap, a movie, lunch, dessert, shopping, cuddling.... it was a great date day.

I'm not totally turning him into a Mommy's boy am I? Ha ha ha!

On How Lame I am

Shaun and I rented Pirates of Carribbean 2, Dead Man's Chest (seriously, the titles are as long as the movies). It took us not one, or two, but three days to watch the 2 1/2 hour movie. Similarly, we won't go see a movie at the theater over 2 hours, as it is just too taxing on us. I can't wait to see what happens when the baby is born. Will Grey's Anatomy be too much for me and I will have to watch it in installments on my DVR?

Maybe this means we aren't lame because we do so much during the day that doesn't involve the TV, that we are too pooped for the boob tube (god I hate that expression, I just liked the way pooped for the boob tube sounded).

Or maybe we are just getting old. Probably that's more like it.
